Devine Tarbell and Associates’ (DTA) Sacramento office is looking for an entry to mid-level civil engineer or engineering geologist with an interest in geotechnical analysis and design.  Current California professional license or the ability to obtain licensure in the near future is mandatory.  Our current backlog includes all aspects of engineering related to hydroelectric plant development and operation.  We are actively pursuing siting and design of new power plant projects (including pumped storage), retrofit of existing plants with newer or improved capacity facilities, and design and construction management of tunnels, roads, bridges and other project features.  Specifically, we are assessing location and preliminary design for pumped storage projects with planned underground structures (tunnels and powerhouses) that need engineering expertise in rock mechanics, soil engineering, seismicity and structural stability.  Potential projects include dam raises, addition of small hydroelectric power stations on existing water supply dams, design and construction of access roads, bridges, turnouts and transmission line routes.  The candidate must possess a strong educational background in civil engineering or engineering geology with an emphasis in geotechnical (soil and rock) engineering or geology.   Projects range from site investigation through detailed design and construction management.

Responsibilities may include:

  • Field investigations leading to geotechnical analysis and design
  • Project site geotechnical/geological inspections
  • Preparation of design criteria, calculations, drawings, permitting documents, construction specifications and bid packages
  • Construction oversight for foundation conditions
  • The ability to handle multiple assignments successfully
  • Field work and overnight travel will be required

Minimum requirements are:

  • B.S. in Civil Engineering or Geosciences from an accredited institution
  • EIT certificate, PE, PG, CEG or the ability to obtain certification within two years
  • Expertise with Excel and AutoCAD
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to work independently
  • Ability to handle multiple assignments successfully
  • Previous applied work experience is desirable, including some or all of the following: geotechnical analysis and design, field exploration including soil and rock drilling and sampling, experience with hydroelectric/water resources projects and construction projects

Interested candidates should contact Mr. Kelly Tilford at DTA, 916-561-4586 and transmit resume via fax to 916-564-4203, or email to kelly.tilford@devinetarbell.com with the subject line “Geotechnical Position”.
