Paint-A-Drain (May31, 2008)
Paint-A-Drain seeks to curb storm water pollution through hands-on, service learning techniques like stenciling storm drain inlets with messages that remind people not to dump anything down the drain. It is a worthwhile, educational program put on by Sacramento County for various volunteers. Storm drain inlets, located near curbsides and streets, act as a conduit to local waterways, including the American and Sacramento Rivers. Unlike household drains that route directly to a wastewater treatment plant, storm drains travel underground and funnel untreated runoff directly to our waterways. When the untreated water is contaminated with pollutants, it creates storm water pollution, which seriously impacts our natural water resources.
The Capitol Branch will be participating in Sacramento County’s “Paint-A-Drain” campaign on Saturday, May 31st in the Arden Park Area. The event will take place from 9-11 am, followed by a barbeque lunch in a local park. This event is open to ASCE members at all levels (branch, YMF, student chapters). In addition to the service opportunity, the proceeding barbeque will serve as a networking opportunity through the different levels of ASCE. If you are interested in participating, please e-mail Brian Brown at bbrown@rbf.com for specific details.
