Many of the levees in the Sacramento area protect urban areas consisting of residential subdivisions.  Since 1951, the Sacramento area has experienced five record flood events.  Recently, the California Department of Water Resources (DWR) published a draft document outlining seismic screening methodologies for these levees.

Dr. Zia Zafir will present a step by step procedure of estimating ground motions, performing liquefaction analyses, and assessing seismic stability of levees under design earthquakes.

Dr. Zia Zafir is a Senior Principle Engineer at Kleinfelder in Sacramento, CA.  He has more than 22 years experience and is a registered civil and geotechnical engineer in California.  Dr. Zafir has been actively involved on seismic hazard evaluations and seismic retrofit for renowned national and international projects.
